Hospital Workforce

The MyHospitals section of the AIHW website contains a lot of data regarding hospitals, the services they provide and staffing.

The Hospital Workforce report provides a snapshot of public hospital staffing:

In 2021–22:

  • there were 435,700 FTE staff employed in public hospitals
  • of these, 41% (or 180,200) were Nurses and 12% (or 53,800) were Salaried medical officers.

These staff numbers do not include visiting medical officers in public hospitals and most medical officers who provide services in private hospitals.

A multitude of data on public hospitals updated to 2021-2022 is also available as Excel file
