EndNote: What is EndNote and how do I get it?

EndNote version X9.3 is in use at St. Vincent's Hospital Melbourne

EndNote X9 and later libraries are not backwardly compatible with older versions of EndNote. If you work in an environment with multiple versions of EndNote you can convert your libraries to the new database engine using the instructions below:

To use libraries created with EndNote X8, X9 or X9.2 , you need to convert the library through EndNote X9.3 or later. To do this,
1. Open EndNote X9.3 or later
2. select File / Open / Open Library...and select the old EndNote library file you wish to convert. 

When saving do not select the box that says "Save as a Package". EndNote X9.3 or later will create a new library and leave the original library unchanged.

What can it do for me?

It can save you a lot of time finding PDFs and citing in your document.

EndNote is a reference management software application. Other examples include Zotero, Mendeley, RefWorks and Papers. You can use EndNote to:

Create your own library of references

  • Download references from catalogues and databases
  • Generate references from PDF files
  • Organise your references into groups
  • Add keywords, labels and notes
  • Search and sort your references
  • Find, attach and annotate full-text PDF files
     

Insert citations or footnotes and generate bibliographies

  • Insert in-text citations or footnotes into your documents
  • Generate bibliographies
  • Choose from thousands of citation styles, such as APA, Chicago, or Harvard
  • Easily change between citation styles
     

Collaborate with others

  • Use EndNote Online to share selected groups of references with others, or
  • Share your whole EndNote library
     

EndNote onsite at St. Vincent's is available for Windows, not Macs.

How do I get it?

EndNote Onsite 

St. Vincent's Hospital Melbourne has a site licence and EndNote X9.3  (version 19) is installed on most PCs, check under Start then Programs.  If you do not have the EndNote program on your work computer, call IT Services on 9231 4000 or 1300 518 001 to request it.

If you anticipate needing access your EndNote while at home only on the odd occasion, then consider creating an account for EndNote Online from your desktop onsite. When you set up an account with EndNote Online your EndNote Library is posted to the web and can be accessed with your account name and password from any internet connection. 

 

EndNote Offsite

If you are working from home and haven't set up EndNote Online you can use EndNote Basic or install the EndNote X9.3 program on your home computer. To learn more about these options see EndNote Offsite.
