Applications of artificial intelligence in healthcare

What is AI?

Welcome to our guide on artificial intelligence (AI) in healthcare! This guide provides information introducing AI itself in addition to its application in medicine.

AI has great potential to improve many aspects of clinical care including enhanced detection of abnormal findings in various imaging modalities to assistance in clinical decision making. However, despite the boom in literature published on AI, definitive evidence of AI's applications in the healthcare setting is still in progress. There are many ethical and legal issues concerning AI that are still being investigated and methods to manage or address these concerns are still in development. In particular, there are concerns regarding privacy, plagiarism in scholarly writing, lack of policy and bias, the last of which has the impact to affect the quality of clinical care.

The guide includes recently published journal articles covering a comparison of AI to humans in healthcare, potential uses in the clinical world and some useful documents and websites. Due to the explosion of research into AI and its applications, this field is constantly evolving and whilst this guide provides an introduction, it is important to keep up to date with the latest developments.
